Calling all contemporary art lovers, or just fun lovers in general. Gold Coast Bleach Festival celebrates the city’s most dynamic and adventurous artists, welcomes renowned Australian and international collaborators and engages a broad audience through a range of events. Bleach Festival starts 17 – 28 April 2019 inclusive.

Bleach Festival uses the Gold Coast’s world-famous natural landscape as unconventional venues to showcase incredible arts and cultural experiences that challenge expectations, change perceptions and provide a unique and authentic sense of place. It’s the biggest arts and culture extravaganza on the Gold Coast, welcoming a vast audience of all ages to 17 days of fun and festivity.

Here is a list of program of 47 events for the Gold Coast Bleach Festival 2019 – there is something for everyone.

#1: Luka Lesson

Join Australian poet and rapper, Luka Lesson for an evening of spoken words to sooth your soul at the bar, Nineteen at the Star. Luka’s words engages with the mythology of his family homeland, fiercely political opinions on Australian society and the introspective reflections on his personal life. Luka has wrote two published collections and two full-length recorded albums. Luka has been commissioned by the likes of National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

#2: Burleigh Bleach Club events

Head down to the first ever licensed bar on the beach at Burleigh Heads, listen to live music and see mind blowing performances. Program highlights include Australia’s leading contemporary dance company, Dancenorth, with Tectonic; a mind-boggling, flaming spectacle, Pyrophone Juggernaut; Gold Coast’s own Shock Therapy Productions with The Cleaners; the ever-popular Pub Choir in The Bleach* Club; and an incredible contemporary music line-up, headlined every night by Australian women powerhouses.

#3: Verdi’s Requiem

Verdi’s Requiem is Bleach Festival’s centrepiece production, this opera is an invitation to gather and look within ourselves as the music invites us to reflect and have hope.

“Sometimes referred to as “an opera in ecclesiastical vestments”, Verdi’s gift for dramatic writing is on full display in this remarkable score for almost a hundred musicians and a chorus of over sixty singers. Asking the grand questions of life, it takes the audience on an intense musical journey from the depths of profound despair to ecstatic hope – a transcendent work, once experienced never forgotten.”

#4: Throttle

Experience live-action drive in with a difference, brought to you by Helpmann Award-winning Gold Coast Dance Theatre Company, The Farm. View from within the safety of your own car, turn on your headlights and radio, and watch the performance through your windscreen.

#5: Tectonic

Combine the glorious outdoors and the beaches of the Gold Coast, imagine 180 fit balls half-buried in the sand, Tectonic is a confluence of sculpture, movement and sound, unfolding in a dazzling site-specific performance on the beach. 15 minutes performances by dancers from Dancenorth.

#6: Water Songs

Water Songs – Songs for the Waterways, is a magical, musical concert series which voyages the Gold Coast’s glittering waterways across the Festival.

Free-to-the-public Water Songs performances will be taking place in stunning waterway parks across the City for all to enjoy on 18 April, 20 April, and 23 April 2019 from 4pm.

Homes from the Gold Coast will host part of this intimate concert series. The backyard concert will be turned on its head, with the pontoon as the stage, the canal as the backdrop and the audience drinking in Nep-tuneful melodies from the open-air comfort of the neighbourhood backyard. Homes hosted performances cost $15 and are in various locations throughout the Gold Coast on 19 April, 21 April and 23 April at 6.30pm.

#7: My Urrwai

My Urrwai is a theatrical performance featuring movement and words to reflect on and celebrate cultural and familial inheritance, and comment on race relations in Australia.

Performed by Ghenoa Gela, Ghenoa’s energetic auto-biographical journey brings to life the meaning of Urrwai – a combination of “my spirit, my style, my essence” in the Kala Lagaw Ya language, indigenous to the Torres Strait.

#8: Terror Australis

Terror Australis is a blood-splattered, lip-synched, utterly beautiful nightmare, packed full of urban myth, cultural tropes and goon.

You can expect the works of Australian performance artist, Leah Shelton, to sit in the sweet spot between cabaret, anti-burlesque and live art.

#9: The Soldier’s Wife

Some of Queensland’s most highly regarded songwriters have worked with hundreds of women from varying backgrounds and conflicts – including 160 soldiers’ wives from the Gold Coast branches of the Australian War Widows of Queensland, to sing about love, loss, existence and, most of all, resilience.

Join the deeply moving celebration of survivors accompanied by the HOTA choir to honour the women who are our soldiers’ wives.

#10: Nyala Bulahbu Gali

Join a conversation, a ceremony, a song, and a cup of tea to have  deeper understanding of Indigenous cultural frameworks by Kyle Slabb.

There will be a series of three conversations to investigate ideas of modern and ancient time and space, listening and hearing and relational systems of traditional hierarchical structures and flat leadership.

Conversation 1: Binangu – 10:00am – 11.30am

Listening and hearing, on all levels and planes – our minds, our bodies, our spirits.

Conversation 2: Ngubuwa – 1:00pm – 2.30pm

This conversation investigates cultural perceptions of time and space. .

Conversation 3: Jimbalungare – 3.30pm -5:00pm

The final of the series examines our connection or relationship to each other and other entities. The foundational framework for relationship contrasted to and applied to questions around other systems like hierarchy and flat leadership.

#11: Landing

Landing invites you to participate or spectate as swimmers physically experience distance and take part in a policy of exile. Swimmers wearing island-shaped hats will plunge into the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre main pool, attempting to swim a distance equivalent to the ocean stretch between Manus and Australia’s mainland.

Join an afternoon of conversation with WOW Women of the World in Australia focusing around the range of issues and challenges facing women in the performing arts.

#14: Limbo Unhinged

Blanc de Blanc are back on the Gold Coast to bring you an intoxicating mix of cabaret, circus and acrobatics in Limbo Unhinged.

Limbo Unhinged invites audiences to delve deeper into the exhilarating party that is Strut & Fret’s award-winning, international sensation, Limbo. The sequel is a brazen, crazed and wildly hypnotic exploration of your favourite characters, alongside a host of new, world-renowned circus performers.
